CRP Land Management: What Is It?
CRP land management is the process of managing the use and development of land resources for one of the largest private lands conservation programs in the United States, known as the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP).
The CRP was created in 1985 by the federal government in order to conserve and improve soil, protect water quality, and provide wildlife habitat by establishing long-term cover on highly erodible land or land that has previously been in row crop production and is in need of conservation buffers. The U.S. Department of Agriculture has charged the Farm Service Agency (FSA) with the administration of this land conservation program.
Landowners and farmers who participate in the program agree to remove environmentally sensitive land from agricultural production and plant species that will improve the environmental health and quality of the land. In return, the program provides a yearly rental payment for participating, with contracts often ranging from 10 to 15 years.
While these contracts are beneficial both for the environment and the landowners, 15 years is a significant commitment. It is important that the right plant species are cultivated and opportunistic invasive species are discouraged. CRP land management can be time-consuming and laborious. That’s where Tallgrass Land Management comes in.
